Writing for Stage and Screen – Middle School – Winter/Spring 2020

During the first session, students will learn the key components of writing—character, dialogue, action, setting—for theater, television, and film and the how the mediums differ. They then will jump right into writing their own work, which they will send to the instructors between sessions. During subsequent sessions students will read each other’s work and receive notes from the instructors.

For middle school students.

Six Sundays: Jan 5, Feb 2, March 1, March 29, May 3, June 7

Instructor:

Tom Nieboer is a playwright and screenwriter from Mora, Minnesota. His work has been produced or developed by UglyRhino, IRT Theater, Hearth Gods, Lesser Mortals, Umbrella Theater Project, the Lyric Theater, the Skylight Theater Company, and the Project Arts Centre. His play Glowworm was nominated for three Tiger Dublin Fringe Awards and one Irish Times Irish Theatre Award. He is a founding member of The Tavern Rakes performance troupe in Los Angeles. He holds an MFA in Playwriting from The Lir Academy at Trinity College Dublin and has lectured at St. John’s University in Queens.
